GEAR REVIEW: PATROL INCIDENT GEAR (PIG) FULL DEXTERITY TACTICAL GLOVES (FDT-ALPHA)
Designing a great pair of gloves is a game of compromise between protection and sense of touch. Somewhere in between these two contrary goals are things like ease of use, comfort, utility and of course, style. Using this metric, PIG have managed to provide an incredible amount of protection for a full-fingered glove that provides as much sensitivity to the touch as perhaps a baseball glove would all the while, surpassing what is thought as possible in comfort, utility and style.
1: This is one of PIG’s FDT Alpha Glove’s defining features: The ultra light-weight Clarino man-made leather that provides all the sensitivity of a baseball glove with all the durability of a tactical shooting glove.
2: Trigger fingers on both gloves are sensitized with ultra-thin Clarino fabric. If you currently wear fingerless gloves, perhaps this is the full-fingered compromise you’ve been waiting for.
3: Sometimes, just getting a pair of gloves on can be like learning to unhook a bra for the first time, every time. The simple solution of a bar-tacked paracord loop stitched into the cuff is the kind of designful thinking that will have you wondering how this remained a problem after the second pair of gloves were ever made.
4: Now, its really hard to tell from the photos and PIG’s low-profile design but the knuckles are extremely padded. They’re not kevlar or carbon-fibre but they provide serious protection and warmth. You wouldn’t tell by just looking.
5: A micro suede nose and sweat wipe that’s so soft you’ll think you’re in a Charmin commercial. Again, smart, designful thinking.
6: Flex joints where the fingers bend not only improve dexterity but also breathability and comfort too. The all-important trigger finger has dual joints.
7: Last but definitely not least is one of the best details that isn’t even mentioned by PIG themselves on the packaging. If you look closely, you’ll see that there is no stitching on the tips of the fingers – the sensitive Clarino fabric wraps around the finger tips preventing loose fabric and stitching from becoming caught or snagged. A particularly important feature when dealing with any task finicky enough that it requires the unimpaired use of your fingertips.
